California Governor Gray Davis Keynote Speaker At New California Media's 2001 Expo Multiethnic Media and Marketing

Gov. Gray Davis gave the keynote address at The New California Media (NCM) EXPO on the "hows" and "whats" of communicating with California's fastest growing markets. The EXPO took place on Feb. 15, in San Francisco. "The latest Census figures document the remarkable growth of California's new multiethnic majority and explain why this state is now Ground Zero for the country's burgeoning ethnic news media," says Sandy Close, founder and Executive Director of New California Media. "Having Governor Davis give the keynote, speaks to the historic recognition of the new influence of ethnic media in California." Over 2000 guests -- advertisers and advertising agency executives, leaders of mainstream and online media, government agencies, foundations, PR and marketing firms, national non profits, interested citizens attended a day of exhibits, panels, consulting sessions, networking and recruiting possibilities showcasing ethnic media. Davis spoke of the immigrant spirit that is California's economic engine, referring to their "reservoir of passion and staying power." "What drives productivity and economic wealth is the strong immigrant drive resulting in economic gain and productivity," he said. There is no longer a majority ethnicity, he noted. Davis said he wanted to "honor media for all segments of California society, and recognize the diversity that exists in California, America's other Ellis Island."
